| What is ornamental pattern? What is symmetry? |
Ornamental pattern - (from latin ornamentum - an ornament) is a pattern consisting of rhythmically repeated elements.Ornamental patterns are constant participants of our daily life, they are our eternal companions, accompanying mankind at all stages of its culture. We can see these patterns everywhere - on our clothes and on the wallpaper, in the bathroom and on the furnuture, on the buildings and on the carpets. They can be magnificent and modest, simple and intricate. What unify all the ornamental patterns - they all possess different types of symmetry.
We can define a symmetry of a planar picture as a motion of the plane that leaves this picture unchanged. From this point of view we can mark out three basic types of symmetry - translation, rotation and reflection. All other symmetries can be obtained from these basic ones.
Translations
A translation slides all the points in the plane the same distance in the same direction.
Rotations
A rotation turns all the points in the plane around one point, which is called the center of rotation. The center of rotation is the only invariant point (point that maps onto itself) under a rotation. A rotation of 180 degrees is called a half turn. A rotation of 90 degrees is called a quarter turn.
Reflections
A reflection flips all the points in the plane over a line, which is called the mirror. A reflection changes the the sense of figures in the plane. All the points in the mirror contains all the invariant points (points that map onto themselves) under a reflection.
Using Logo possibilities we can try and design our own ornamental patterns. This work is simple even for the very young students, for the most attractive designs can be composed from the most simple fragments.
